Adult learners

Sam has led writing and reading groups for adults of all ages and abilities for several years. In 2009, she founded a local writing collective ME4Writers (Highly commended in Medway Council’s Culture and Design Awards 2012), and has led regular creative writing classes for groups of up to 20 students since then. She runs 17Percent – an organisation to support female playwrights, and has taught playwriting as part of this. She has also taught several short courses and given lectures in playwriting and creative writing for Medway Council. She ran a 7-week ‘Starting your play’ course for the WEA in 2015. She has taught various writing classes for the WEA.

Some of the lectures and seminars she has given are: a lecture on female playwrights at Rochester Information Hub (8 March 2012). The lecture lasted two hours and covered UK female playwrights from the 1600s to today; a three-hour class on improving your story-writing skills in July 2012 for Medway Archives; a two-hour class on creative letter writing for Medway Libraries in November 2012; Sam also gave an inspirational talk about ‘Hearing women’s voices’ at Medway’s International Women’s Day 2013 celebration.

In their feedback, all attendees have rated the talks and seminars highly.

“Liked the introduction and comfortable quiet surroundings. Really valued the opportunity to write again, creatively after many years.” “More of the same please. An evening event would be good if possible!” “Found the event fun and relaxing and hope more workshops like this will be organised.” “Sam was a helpful presence throughout but gave space to write, while running the group.”
“Sam’s short story writing workshop, based on the local archival resources, took place in Medway Archives and Local Studies Centre in summer 2012. A very well structured session provided stimuli and was thoroughly enjoyed by those who took part. “Very informative” and “encouraging” was the participants’ view.” Irina Fridman, Medway Local Studies librarian.
Sam also successfully completed a Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) certificate (2010).
